There are a lot of surprising places in Taiwan! Deep in the mountains of Hsinchu county, you can find the highest village in Taiwan that looks like a European mountain resort with cozy wooden cottages and stunning views. The place is called Smangus or “Tribe which is the closest to the sky”! It’s hard to believe that 30 years ago it was very hidden and not even reachable by car. Now it’s a great place for a holiday getaway, where seasonally you can see sakura blossom and golden maple leaves. Despite being so open to tourists, the tribe still maintains its traditions, like hunting, the local language, sacred attitude to nature, and collectivism.
